TGD People and Eating Disorders:
Australian Human Rights Commission - Current and Emerging Threats to Trans and Gender Diverse (TGD) Human Rights
A joint submission lodged to the Australian Human Rights Commission in May 2024. Written and submitted by Kai Schweizer (BA, MSexol), Lumen Gorrie (MPsych[Clin], BPsych[Hons]), Hayden Moon (BA[Hons]), and Majella Jones (BNut, BDiet, APD).
This submission highlights human rights threats confronting TGD folk in so-called “Australia”, with particular focus on how such threats intersect with eating disorder (ED) prevention, development, and treatment for TGD folk. We (the authors) assert that current ED treatment not only fails to meet the needs of TGD people, but also poses a threat to TGD human rights. Furthermore, we argue that restrictions to gender-affirming medical care will increase the prevalence and severity of EDs amongst TGD people in Australia.

This blog highlights significant harms that the NHS’ decision will have on TGD youth’s wellbeing, particularly in relation to eating disorder prevalence and severity.
